Cultural melding might be taking place in our globalised business environment, however, this only means that there is an even greater need for cross-cultural understanding and training. According to Bianca Stringuini, American Express' diversity manager for the JAPA region, "Cultural understanding will always remain important and ever more so because distances with today's technologies are shortening, and teams and customers sit across regions with decision making conducted anywhere in the world. Each culture influences each other culture but we're seeing the new concept of respecting differences and practising inclusion of these differences, because this brings innovation to the business."

It is crucial for companies to recognise that talent is linked to business performance in any economic situation, said Dhirendra Shantilal, senior vice president - Asia Pacific of Kelly Services, and newly-elected President for the Singapore Staffing Association. Even as Singapore braces for a global slowdown in growth, engaging and retaining high-performing talent amidst changing demographics such as a graying population and mobility of talent regionally and globally need to continue, he observed.

Due to rising costs caused by the credit crunch, firms are compelled to give large pay rises to staff. According to a report by Croner Reward, more than 40% of companies in the UK felt pressured to give larger salary increases than in 2007.

Singapore's Labour Chief Lim Swee Say expects retrenchments this year to be higher than last year. Official figures showed that already 4,174 workers were retrenched in the first half of the year, compared to 7,675 for the entire 2007.

Hiring and retaining staff is the biggest challenge for public accounting firms in Singapore. A recent survey by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS) revealed that among audit staff, 73% of firms were operating below the ideal capacity.

  Australians satisfied with work-life balance
The majority of Australians are content with their work-life balance. According to the 2008 Australian Work Life Index (AWALI), more than half of employees surveyed felt overloaded with work or felt too rushed. Female participants reported a decline in work-life balance due to having children, but males were not affected by it.

  SAP APJ bags Effie Award
SAP Asia Pacific Japan (APJ) has topped the Corporate Identity category at the Singapore Effie Awards 2008 for its employee recruitment campaign. The company reported an increase of 16% in its headcount in Q2 2008. Its recruitment campaign aimed to attract 2,400 mid- to senior level talent to send in their CVs for positions across 11 markets, generating 8,000 unique job searches on the portal and getting key employees to refer at least three people each. The campaign surpassed its targets.

  HR professionals reveal performance management trends
More than half of Australian HR professionals conduct formal performance management reviews. According to a PageUp People online Performance Management Survey, 75% of respondents indicated that a rating system was used in a performance management review. Fifty-two per cent of participants felt that there was a correlation between an employees' rank on a rating system and their remuneration. The survey also revealed that less than half of HR systems were integrated with the performance management process (49%).

  Qantas job cuts to affect future wages
The Qantas Group has decided to cut 1,500 jobs globally to cope with sustained high oil prices and changing economic conditions. Due to the job cuts, there would be a recruitment and executive pay freeze for the foreseeable future.
